Hospital hawk

I was stuck in a bit of traffic yesterday from the construction at Albany Medical Center. While scanning the rooftops a bump with a familiar beak caught my eye. Pulling over by a hydrant, I flipped on my flashers and got out, binocs in hand*. It was a Red-tailed Hawk perched just below a peaked cornice, only her head showing. A few minutes of scanning the view, and she took off with a substantial rat in her talons.

What really struck me was not that no one walking along noticed the hawk, but that nobody gave me a glance as I watched. I guess middle-aged women really are invisible.

*I told you I take my birding bag everywhere!

  1. really? a woman pulled over, looking through binoculars isn’t something to be noticed? I would have stopped to try and figure out what you were looking at at least.

    geesh.
