Yes, I spent a weekend in the Adirondacks and hardly saw any birds! How did I manage that?
1. It rained most of the time.
2. It was our first-ever and last-ever fall Quilters’ Getaway! We usually have our weekend in May but decided to add a fall event this year. We had a fabulous time, including an outrageous costume contest, but sadly, the camp will be closing and sold. Sob! We’ll find another place, but it won’t be the same without Sonrise.
What did I see? Hordes of Juncos moving through in waves, some unidentifiable gulls, and a Common Merganser! She (or immie he) patrolled the shoreline, back and forth, ducking her head underwater for a few seconds as she paddled along — checking out the minnow prospects.
Yup, a list bird and a life bird. Odd, that — I’ve seen the other two Mergansers and just assumed I had Common on my list too. But I don’t! That brings my NYS list to 196 solid IDs. Creeping up slowly on 200…
